Nintendo Unveils Nintendo 3DS

At the E3 Expo in LA, Nintendo its new portable gaming system, the 3DS, that lets people view games in 3D, without the need for special glasses. Nintendo also announced a list of games in development for the Nintendo 3DS.

At the unveiling, Nintendo video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto said that “the dimension of depth in 3D makes it easier for players to judge distances while giving developers a new tool to create games and experiences that play with both height and depth.”

The Nintendo 3DS has three cameras - one inner and two outer - to deliver the 3D effect and take 3D pictures. It also includes a motion sensor, a gyro sensor and a Slide Pad that allows 360-degree analog input. The games in the development pipeline for the Nintendo 3DS include:

  • Mario Kart
  • Paper Mario
  • Nintendogs+ Cats
  • Steel Diver
  • Kid Icarus: Uprising
  • PilotWings Resort
  • Animal Crossing
  • StarFox 64 3D
  • DJ Hero 3D
  • Resident Evil: Revelations
  • The Sims 3
  • Super Street Fighter IV 3D

3D may be just the ticket to boost lagging gaming sales, though it doesn’t look like it will help Nintendo this upcoming holiday season. The company did not say when sales of the Nintendo 3DS would begin, but it has been rumored that the device would go on sale by March 2011. Price TBD.
