Why Nintendo will win the E3 War

While some may oppose, I would say that last year’s E3 press conference was an epic failure on Nintendo’s part. Although they had some exciting news such as the revelation of Mario Kart Wii and the announcement of 32 player online for Medal of Honor: Heroes 2, the majority of the conference was spent talking about the Wii’s success and how great Wii fit was. Forget about last year.  Lets talk about how awesome this year’s press conference will be. I would go as far to say that Nintendo will steal the show this year.

This last week has shown some surprises already for the Wii. And while we’ve had our fair share of guesses, at E3 we can expect more surprising announcements. Pikmin 3? Perhaps. A storage solution? Most definitely. A Zelda trailer? Highly probable.

It may sound, stumbling, but let me explain. This article from PureNintendo, which shows when all the 3D Zelda games were announced and released, crossed my path. A good read, but here’s a summary:

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Announced- December 1995
Released- November 1998

The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask

Announced- June 1999
Released- October 2000

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

Announced- August 2001
Released- March 2003

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Announced- May 2004
Released- November 2006

Now according to the article, every 3D Zelda game was announced one year after its predecessor. Plus, this is the longest time we have waited for Nintendo to announce a Zelda game on a console in over 13 years!

We are overdue. Nintendo will announce a Zelda game at E3 and it will be the most exciting announcement of all three of the console company E3 shows.

If that is not enough for Nintendo to win (which, it is) we can hope for an announcement or an indication of voice chat for the Wii. The DS has it, why not the Wii?

That’s been the question of all online Wii gamers, and Reggie has also been hinting at it for a while. He has noted that he “wouldn’t be surprised” if voice chat made its way onto the Wii. Can we consider that straight confirmation for an announcement?

One last reason why Nintendo will win is the innovation. Nintendo has done some amazing stuff, but nothing to truly show off what the Wii Remote can do (not like Johnny Lee has). Nintendo wants to prove that the Wii Remote is the best controller available, and they are definitely coming up with a game that will show it off. Maybe we’ll see a brand new IP? Or we’ll see them take another existing IP and make a great game perfect for the Remote.  And seeing their repitoire of past titles, that would be just fine with me.

Nintendo will do all they can to “win” E3 this year. And while it isn’t a competition per se, we know that it is close, and we can expect some major announcements.

What do you guys think? Will Nintendo win E3 this year? You have less than two weeks; give us your input in our forums on what will make this year a great year for Nintendo at E3.

I am unsure if this will happen. I think that Nintendo has already enough titles which they can show on E3. These games are Wii Music, Animal Crossing Wii, Disaster: Day of Crisis, Fatal Frame IV, Mario Super Sluggers, Wario Land: Shake It, Project Hammer (I am so happy that this is not more cancelled), ASH: Archaic Sealed Heat, Fire Emblem DS, Jet Impulse, Kirby Super Star Ultra, Pokemon Platinum and Pokemon Ranger 2. And if there will be only these titles it’s clear that Nintendo will not win this E3. But the next Zelda game is really overdue and I think that EAD3 had have enough time to work on it. I do not believe that they worked the last year only on Link’s Crossbow Training. Surely Nintendo would win with a Zelda announcement. Moreover there are so much Nintendo Developers whose current projects are not known by us. Genius Sonority could develop a Pokemon RPG for Wii and EAD4 the next New Super Mario Bros possibly for WiiWare. And there’s the Factor 5 project too (Pilotwings Wii or Kid Icarus Wii?) Also we do not know any project of EAD1, EAD5, EAD Tokyo, the Retro Studios, AlphaDream and Camelot. And Intelligent Systems surely develops more than only Fire Emblem DS (WarioWare Wii 2 with BalanceBoard Support or Super Paper Mario 2?). So Nintendo certainly has the chance of winning this year’s E3. But it’s unsure whether or not they will use it.

I think Valoo (comment above) has made some great predictions and I agree 100%. If I could just release my fanboyism’s for just one second, I’d like to make a fairytale stab in the dark.

I predict Nintendo has some kind of community application/game/device in the works. What ever form that may come in; I am hoping it’s in the form of a camera with a microphone so that you can view contacts while they are playing games such as Wii Fit. You simply download a software update that will allow for you to do yoga with a friend in another country via the camera.

Also a storage upgrade would be good, a hard drive or something like that.

Zelda is coming, thats pretty certain.

I really believe that Animal Crossing will launch with Voice Chat and or a storage solution (GameCUbe version came with a memory card, so Wii version could have improved SD card). Kid Icarus will be shown along with that Zelda trailer and maybe Pikmin 3 as well. Retro Studios is hard at work on something as well and since their taking a break from Metroid don’t expect it to be that.

Nintendo’s E3 conference this year will be great much better than last year.

    @Hotrider
Mario and Zelda sell, and all the Mario spin-offs and sports titles were around on the GameCube as well. There’s only be one true Mario game and that was Galaxy, and theres only been one true Zelda game and that was Twilight Princess. Not to mention the fact that each console has two Zelda games anyways:

    N64-
    Ocarina Of Time
    Majora’s Mask

    GameCube
    Wind Waker
    Twilight Princess

    Wii
    Twilight Princess?
    ?

oh, we all know that nintendo will surprise us with their titles, but there are two other titles that are non-nintendo and i cant wait to hear more about them: Madworld, and The Conduit. Hopefully, those titles will be shown at E3. even though E3 for nintendo last year wasn’t anything spectacular, we can hope this year will be it. ps. animal crossing wii online better be announced!

Hahahahaha nintendo always sucks at e3 really they should just cancell what ever they have planned another fitness game LMAO.

  • By Brandon, July 2, 2008 @ 9:38 pm

I fully expect to see The Conduit mentioned at E3 with Nintendo saying that they are publishing the game.

Animal Crossing is pretty much 100% certain as coming, same with Kid Icarus.

I agree with most of Valoo’s predictions, but the major announcement i’m hoping for is the Zelda one. However, I have a feeling (hope) that there will be a big announcement for a new Starfox game for the Wii. This series has been failing miserably, just like the Sonic series, and it needs a fresh start with an actual GOOD game to prove that Starfox can still compete with the rest.

I agree with most people on the comment boards here, well except for the people bagging out on Mario and Zelda. Especially the guy who says they suck but also states he doesn’t have a Wii so I’m not sure how that works. Galaxy and Twilight Princess are awesome….simple as that.

But back to my rant. Doesn’t anyone sit back and wonder why Metal Gear Solids Snake is in Smash Brothers, but MGS isn’t coming to the Wii? Hmmm…….could MGS: Wii be announced at E3? We all went crazy when Pit (Kid Icarus) was in Smash Bros, and we’re pretty certain there is a game coming out of that aren’t we……

    Food for thought.

  • By Mike, July 4, 2008 @ 1:01 am

@Barters: That’s a good point, but keep in mind the nature of Smash Bros. Games, not every character has a current game.

They included R.O.B., that doesn’t mean they’ll announce a robot that works with the Wii Remote at E3, will they (proven to work, by the way).

Snake was in the game because he had a Gamecube game. Will we see a MGSWii? I’d like to, but there are other IPs I feel need to be resurrected first that would use the hardware to its potential more than a MGS title would.
